Fall25 - French Cinema: L'Assassinat du Père Noël B2+
This class is a film-centered language class, dedicated to building oral comprehension and communication skills. Through film, students will enhance their knowledge of spoken French of all levels—formal, standard, and informal—as well as their French cultural literacy.
French cinéma is also a conduit to explore ideas—philosophical, sociological, or political—embodied by actors on film. We’ll contemplate many topics raised in these films and read criticism and reviews of all three films to deepen your appreciation of them.
Lastly, you’ll listen to and study popular songs from the period each film exploded in the world of French cinéma. No textbook required for this course.

This course delves into the Belle Époque (1871–1914), a pivotal period of peace, progress, and cultural brilliance in Paris. From the rise of Haussmannian architecture and electrification to the universal expositions and the construction of the Eiffel Tower, students will explore how Paris became the cultural capital of Europe. Through the study of key figures such as Sarah Bernhardt, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Camille Claudel, among others, as well as period art, songs, posters, or press excerpts, learners will analyze, comment and discuss the social, artistic, and technological transformations that defined this golden age.
Part 1: Paris, Capital of Modernity (1871–1900). This first part of this workshop examines the transformation of Paris following the fall of the Paris Commune in 1871, highlighting major urban developments, the introduction of electricity, the first metro lines, and the landmark Universal Expositions of 1889 and 1900. Students will also explore the emergence of Art Nouveau, the invention of cinema by the Lumière brothers, and the Eiffel Tower as an icon of modernity, using authentic visual and textual sources from the era.
