Students will be responsible for weekly assigned readings and encouraged to share their questions and impressions on our e-learning platform. From the mysterious events in the Paris Opera House to the tragic destiny of the Phantom, this suspenseful and romantic tale will certainly keep you engaged from start to finish. A perfect course for lovers of classic literature and gothic atmosphere.

This class is a film-centered language class, dedicated to building oral comprehension and communication skills. Through film, students will enhance their knowledge of spoken French of all levels—formal, standard, and informal—as well as their French cultural literacy.  

French cinéma is also a conduit to explore ideas—philosophical, sociological, or political—embodied by actors on film. We’ll contemplate many topics raised in these films and read criticism and reviews of all three films to deepen your appreciation of them.  

Lastly, you’ll listen to and study popular songs from the period each film exploded in the world of French cinéma. No textbook required for this course.

French Cinéma is also a conduit to explore French culture— sociological, or political—through stories captured on film. This quarter we’ll explore the role Charles Aznavour had in shaping French culture and vice versa. We’ll continue our exploration of pop music with another phenome, this time female: Sylvie Vartan. These two vedettes were both immigrants of Armenian descent. This quarter we’ll study three films that demonstrate the importance of music in creating French identity and exceptionalism: Mehdi Idir’s and Grand Corps Malade’s Monsieur Aznavour (2024), Marc di Domenico’s and Charles Aznavour’s Le Regard de Charles (2019), and lastly Ken Scott’s Ma mère, Dieu, et Sylvie Vartan (2025).

We will read criticism and reviews of all three films to deepen your appreciation of them.

Lastly, you’ll listen to and study popular songs from the periods and artists depicted in each film.

Embark on a culinary and linguistic journey through the heart of France's culinary heritage! Indulge your senses and deepen your appreciation for the rich tapestry of French culture through the lens of its world-renowned gastronomy, with a focus on traditional holiday celebrations and dishes.

In this 3-part workshop, through a combination of interactive language lessons and gastronomic discussions, students will elevate their language skills while discovering the secrets behind classic French gastronomy. You will build upon your advanced language foundation by engaging in nuanced conversations about food, wine, and culinary experiences; and enhance your vocabulary, grammar, and comprehension while exploring gastronomic literature and resources.

Prerequisite: any General French B2.1 and B2.2 -level class, or a B2.2 result at our placement test.

Explore contemporary French society through authentic documents. This couse will look at clothing, social and cultural debates, modern writings, and other aspects of French society, to learn about today's France. Good for developing oral and written comprehension and expression.

This course delves into the Belle Époque (1871–1914), a pivotal period of peace, progress, and cultural brilliance in Paris.
