Spring26 - Book Club B2+/C1: Proust, Du Côté de chez Swann Part 1 (SPR1)

Specialized French

Discover the "cathedral of words" in this two-part journey through the first volume of Marcel Proust’s masterpiece.

We begin in Part 1 (Spring 1 session) by exploring the childhood memories of Combray and the evocative power of Noms des pays, focusing on the famous "madeleine" moment and the birth of the narrator’s consciousness.

[In Part 2 (Spring 2 session), we will pivot to Un Amour de Swann, a standalone psychological study of obsession and high society that serves as a mirror for the narrator’s own future. Register in Spring 2 separately.]

This course is a collaborative book club designed to make Proust’s famously long sentences accessible and rewarding. Together, we will navigate his lush syntax to uncover profound insights into memory, art, and the passage of time. Our discussions will bridge the text with the music and painting of the Belle Époque, transforming a notoriously "difficult" classic into a vivid, shared experience.

  • Level: B2+/C1
  • Prerequisite: having completed B2.3 or B2+ courses.

Pace: Once a week (course duration varies)

L'écume des Jours by Boris Vian

La Maison Vide by Mauvignier

Les Choses by Georges Perec

Specialized French

This class is a film-centered language class, dedicated to building oral comprehension and communication skills. Through film, students will enhance their knowledge of spoken French of all levels—formal, standard, and informal—as well as their French cultural literacy.

French Cinéma is also a conduit to explore French culture— sociological, or political—through stories captured on film. This quarter we’ll explore the evolution of the ‘polar’ in French cinéma, which means we’ll be studying the underbelly of society and the characters that inhabit it. This fatalist vision of a corrupt society is integral to the ‘polar’ genre and demonstrated perfectly in our three films. We’ll begin the quarter with Henri-Georges Clouzot's L’assassin habite… au 21 (1942) and continue with Touchez pas au grisbi (1954) de Jacques Becker. We will then turn to Claude Sautet’s Max et les ferrailleurs (1971).

We will read criticism and reviews of all three films to deepen your appreciation of them.

Lastly, you’ll listen to and study popular songs from the periods and artists depicted in each film.

Memoirs of Hadrian by Marquerite Yourcenar

Modiano’s debut novel is a sardonic, often grotesque satire of France during the Nazi occupation.

We are immediately plunged into the hallucinatory imagination of Raphaël Schlemilovitch, a young Jewish man, torn between self-aggrandisement and self-loathing, who may be the heir to a Venezuelan fortune, may have lived during the Nazi Occupation, may have rubbed shoulders with the most notorious collaborators and anti-Semites of the time, may even have been the lover of Eva Braun… or he may have been none of these things.

But at the centre of this vortex is ‘La Place de l’Étoile’ – the Place of the Star – which is both the geographical and moral centre of Paris, and that place next the heart where French Jews were compelled to wear the yellow star, the symbol of their persecution.
