Travel to Brittany, this beautiful region of the West of France for an evening, through the art of crêpe-making and the opinions of a proud Breton. We’ll talk about the geography, the culture, the traditions of the region. We’ll also learn how to make its most famous dish, “La crêpe”, its toppings, through a demonstration and sampling.  Great for beginners. You will learn 10 new words and expressions, essential for your trip to Brittany. 

This class is taught by Emma Le Du, a French native from Brittany. Crêpes and galettes are a long-rooted geographic and family tradition which represent the authenticity and excellence of the region. This engaging workshop uses Édith Piaf's iconic anthem as a springboard to explore the full spectrum of French negation. Students will move beyond basic negation to master the subtle art of saying "no" in French - from the emphatic "ne...jamais" to the restrictive "ne...que," and the sophisticated "ne...guère." Step into the colorful, quirky, and often surprising world of French idiomatic expressions! This dynamic and engaging workshop is for students of French who want to sound more natural, deepen their understanding of the language, and uncover the cultural richness behind everyday expressions.  

Through a variety of engaging materials and interactive activities, this workshop explores how idioms are used in context—both in France and across the Francophone world. Students will examine the literal and figurative meanings of expressions like avoir le cafard (“to have the cockroach”) or poser un lapin (“to put down a rabbit”), and compare them to their English equivalents, cultural nuances, and possible pitfalls.  

By the end of the course, students will be able to confidently interpret, use, and appreciate idiomatic language in conversation, writing, and media, adding depth, humor, and authenticity to their French.

Immerse yourself in the heart of southern France with instructor Frédéric Dugenet, who grew up in Provence! He will mention places that are off the beaten track and focus on regional differences between standard French and Provençal-accented French.  Learn where and when to see the best lavender fields, explore the Calanques national park between Marseille and Cassis, learn how to make the most of your farmer’s market experience, which hill top villages are the most photogenic and where the best beaches are located.  In a nutshell, experience the art of living well “à la provençale!”

This class is a film-centered language class, dedicated to building oral comprehension and communication skills. Students will watch La Bûche (1999). Through this film, students will enhance their knowledge of spoken French of all levels—formal, standard, and informal—as well as their French cultural literacy.  

French cinéma is also a conduit to explore ideas—philosophical, sociological, or political—embodied by actors on film. We’ll contemplate many topics raised in these films and read criticism and reviews of all three films to deepen your appreciation of them.  

Lastly, you’ll listen to and study popular songs from the period each film exploded in the world of French cinéma. No textbook required for this course.

Welcome to our workshop series Voyages Extraordinaires! 

This workshop invites you on an extraordinary journey through the Democratic Republic of the Congo. One of the largest countries in Africa and centrally located in the heart of the continent. Discover this fascinating and contrasting land as we examine multiple aspects of its culture. 

Starting with its history, we see how many different influences over time bring a somewhat cyclical nature to governmental events and bring us into the present. In arts and language, we will see how the DRC's music scene is known throughout Africa and around the world, and how language defines interactions as French is used in schools and government, and personal communications are held in either Lingala, Swahili, Kikongo, and/or Tshiluba. Lastly, we will see how the lands' abundance of natural resources and unique biodiversity impacts their economic growth.  

During this workshop, we will travel through this true earthly paradise, enriching your vocabulary with words and expressions related to rare minerals, animal and plant species, and local culture. You will get to experience the principles of linguistic immersion, Congolese style, as we explore this country of a thousand wonders.

This unique workshop is designed for language enthusiasts who not only wish to enhance their French skills but also want to delve into the rich history, culture, and traditions of this part of France.  

You will talk about Rennes, a city steeped in history and adorned with a blend of ancient and modern architecture. You will learn about the vibrant Breton culture, its languages, unique festivals, traditional cuisine, and folklore that have shaped the identity of the region for centuries.

This course can be taken more than once as content is adapted based on the students who have registered (returning students will study new material).

Immerse yourself in the heart of southern France with instructor Frédéric Dugenet, who grew up in Provence! He will mention places that are off the beaten track and focus on regional differences between standard French and Provençal-accented French.  Learn where and when to see the best lavender fields, explore the Calanques national park between Marseille and Cassis, learn how to make the most of your farmer’s market experience, which hill top villages are the most photogenic and where the best beaches are located.  In a nutshell, experience the art of living well “à la provençale!”

This 3-part workshop series explores the short film 14e arrondissement by Alexander Payne, from the 2006 anthology Paris, je t'aime. Follow Carole, a mailwoman from Denver, Colorado in her discovery of Paris 14th arrondissement to identify English speakers' difficulties in speaking French. With a comparative analysis of French and English, and through an authentic and cultural approach, these 3 workshops will provide keys to become aware of deceptive cognates and common mistakes in pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar.   

Part 1 will focus on Grammar. You may sign up for one, two, or all three parts of the series! Members get 10% off any additional course in the same term.
