• Take our online free level assessment. Level assessments are mandatory for all new students and students returning after three (3) terms or more.
• Upon receiving a result, register in the corresponding course. Please note that in some cases, our admissions coordinator might contact you for a follow-up oral assessment. Please be careful when choosing a course/level and follow the fluency levels below.

We have a strict policy regarding level assessment, as it may affect teaching methods, learning progress, and the course experience for you and the rest of the class. Our educational team will proceed to transfers or unenrollments in case of registration in the wrong level.

Our youth program is organized on an academic year schedule: all courses start in the Fall quarter and continue until June. Due to limited online classes capacity, students enrolled in Fall & Winter have priority enrollment for Winter & Spring.

• Current students: To enroll in the next quarter, please follow your instructor's recommendation, or email us at info@afseattle.org.

• New students in the Fall:
  • Have your child take our online level assessment (scroll to the appropriate age group).

• New students in Winter or Spring are accepted upon level assessment result (if their fluency level corresponds to the rest of the group), the instructor’s approval, and availability in the class. New students are not eligible for early enrollment or pre-sale discounts. Enrollment procedures:
  • Have your child take our online level assessment test (scroll to the appropriate age group). You can create an account with several family members if needed.
  • Upon receiving a result, email us at info@afseattle.org to get on the waitlist.

Our Member Presale is a 7-day early registration period reserved for AFSeattle members:

• Members have priority enrollment during this period and have exclusive access to early registration pricing on French collective courses*.

• No usage limit during the Pre-Sale: you can enroll in several classes and receive the discount.

Please note:

• Our $40 registration fee is waived for members.
• If you enroll in additional classes after the Pre-Sale, as a member, you will benefit from our usual 10%-member discount on a second/third course in the same term** (valid for Specialized French, One-Week Intensive Reviews, or Workshops).

* Workshops, One-week Intensive Reviews, and courses published after the Pre-Sale are not eligible for early registration discounts.

If you are a new student at the Alliance Française de Seattle, or a student returning after 3 quarters or more, you will need to take our level assessment.

The French school, learning center, or university that you attended previously may use similar CEFR levels, but our curriculum and level breakdown (A1.1, A1.2 etc), based on our textbooks, method, and learning materials, follows our own learning progression system. Our level assessment is customized for AFSeattle and was designed to match our course offer.

• Level Assessments are due before your enrollment.
• If you must transfer courses because you are enrolled in the wrong level:
  • If your level assessment was completed before or during the pre-sale, you will be transferred with the pre-sale discount.
  • If your level assessment was completed after the pre-sale, you will be transferred with the regular registration price.

As of the Summer 2024 quarter, all courses will be moving away from the e-learning platform Apolearn and onto the Student Portal.

The Student Portal is a central place where students can easily manage different aspects of their learning including interacting with teachers and classmates, submitting assignments, updating profile, etc.

The Espace Virtuel provides access to audio files, transcriptions, and answer keys from your General French textbook and workbook.

For adults:

General French

An interactive method-based approach, following a textbook. Three classes complete a level (For A1: A1.1, A1.2, A1.3). 

• Learning pace: 2x 1.5h weekly (Sat. classes are 1x 2.5h weekly).
• Duration: 10 weeks.
• 25 to 30 hours per course.

Specialized French

A more flexible approach with a special focus (e.g. grammar, reading, writing, oral communication, etc.).

• Learning pace: 1.5h or 2h weekly.
• Duration: 5 weeks sessions. Students can register for 1 or several sessions during the term.
• 7.5 to 10 hours per course.

Intensive Reviews

1-week intensive courses to review an entire level. Recommended once a student has reached the end of a level and/or before starting the next one, or as a refresher course

• Learning pace: intensive, 2h or 2.5h daily
• Duration: 4 or 5 days
• 10 hours

Workshops

Designed to cover a specific topic for a single session (pronunciation for beginners, informal French, French for travel, DELF Preparation, etc.).

• Learning pace: intensive, one session
• 1.5 to 3 hours

We are sorry if the course you want if no longer available. You can select the course and schedule of your choice, then click "Add to waitlist". Sometimes, a student drops out before the start of the course. We will contact students on the waitlist in the order that they signed up.

A waitlist of 3-4 students will prompt our team to try and open a new course, upon teacher availability. Such courses, created and added to the catalog upon request after the early registration period, are not eligible for presale pricing.

You will receive a course confirmation with instructions a few days before the start of your course. Your online platform for your course, the Student Portal, will open 4 days before the start of class. The Student Portal is where you will find the course content and the Zoom link to access your virtual class.

General French and Youth classes, as well as the Book Clubs, need a book. Please read your course's description for more details. AFSeattle closed its store, but please check this page for alternative purchasing options.

The Alliance Française de Seattle provides one-on-one and semi-private instruction. Learners benefit from flexible scheduling and personalized instruction. Please note that this is not a tutoring program. To find out more and request a private course, click here.

On March 12, 2020, AFSeattle became the first Alliance Française in North and South America to move its educational and cultural program 100% online. Our adult and youth learners have been very satisfied and enthusiastic about our virtual French classes—read their testimonials here—and our instructors have been doing incredible work to bring them an immersive and interactive learning experience. We have shared our expertise in webinars organized for other Alliances Françaises and we have even been featured on the global television channel TV5Monde (watch it here in French!).

An online course is a live video conference with your instructor and fellow students that will follow the usual format and course plan. Several tools will support our online courses: Apolearn, Zoom, and Frello. For best learning practices, all our adult online group classes are limited to six (6) learners; seven (7) students are accepted for youth group classes.

Zoom: This video conferencing tool is where the virtual class takes place. It is a live course at the scheduled time. We are keeping our Zoom classes safe:
- Every class meeting is password protected.
- Zoom meeting links are never distributed by email; they are only available on our secure e-learning platform.
- Instructors must manually accept students in their class meeting; after the students have arrived, instructors lock the meeting and no one can enter, invited or not.

Frello Modules: A French start-up specialized in creating content for teaching French as a foreign language has implemented a large variety of self-study modules, including vocabulary, phonetics, grammar, oral comprehension, written comprehension, etc. activities. The Frello modules are uses in each General French course for adults as well as the Self-study Reviews. Some instructors might use them in a Specialized French or private class as well.
